2019 Young People’s Writing Competition 

Schools and young people were encouraged to enter the competition.

This was the 7th year of the competition which culminated in a celebration of literacy at Langhorne Creek in September.

The celebration featured local, successful publishers of children’s literature who conducted workshops and talked to the young aspiring authors about the craft of writing, illustrating and being published.

The theme was Bees. 

Entries were  judged on originality, appeal to an audience, sentence structure, correct grammar, accurate spelling and correct use of punctuation.

The five young writer's categories were:

OPEN CATEGORIES          
  • Reception/Year 1 – Picture Book           
  • Years 2 and 3 – up to 500 words             
  • Years 4 and 5 – up to 1000 words           
  • Years 6 and 7 – up to 1500 words           
  • Years 8 through 10 – up to 2000 words – Winner will receive the Lochee Andison Award              

BALLAD CATEGORIES  
  • Years 2 and 3: one or two verses of four lines each.
  • Years 4 and 5: up to four verses of four lines each.
  • Years 6 and 7: up to six verses of four lines each.
  • Years 8 through 10: up to six verses, a maximum of eight lines in each verse.

Prizes: The Winner in each OPEN category received an individual cash prize and a parcel of books for their school library. The Winner each BALLAD category received only a cash prize. Winners ONLY will be notified. Prizes were presented to winners at a special event at the Langhorne Creek Campus of Eastern Fleurieu School on Thursday, September 26, 2019.
